Dual arrivals: a mini fridge and a microwave have inaugurated the sixth floor as ours. The two generous classmates who brought them have done the important work of announcing: we are here to stay and we are in it together. The outermost layers of newness have begun to wear off, and that means talking more, to more people, and making rounds. It means thinking harder for a harder project, drawing and drawing over. Sharing snacks. Pinning up, and upside-down. The grade of see–think–produce has been pitched up, wind and rain on the double-high glass. We are breaking out jackets and sweaters. By the first of October, we’ll have climbed another switchback, and then some.

Spirits are lifted with closer proximity to fiery badminton wars and $2 cortados. Spirits are sunken when a student body that cares deeply about environmental design is nodding off or doodling obscenities during the dry namesake class. Sunken are spirits when what’s left of our attenuated budget is siphoned into more AI lunch-and-learns and fewer Thursday lectures. Lifted are spirits when Mizuki’s laugh echoes across 4 and 5.

The first years have arrived and are settling into the rhythms of Rudolph Hall. Ehsan, Myles, and Janette join us at our jewelbox tucked in the corner of the fourth floor, with Foucault watching over us, or perhaps just watching us…
Over the summer, the second years conducted fieldwork and took a much needed break—now ready and refreshed to write our theses. In these first few weeks of the new academic year, the six of us have met for drinks and dinners, and are already planning the next semester’s MED Working Group events. After an engaging first workshop, the MEDs are energized for wherever this year will take us.

What even is a thesis?
After our first month at YSOA, we began to feel at ease: our studio classmates have done a great job at welcoming us and showing us around. However, every Wednesday, when we discuss our research, the dreaded question arises: Why are you doing a thesis? We immediately snap back into our newbie state of mind. I guess the more you know, the less you know.

The second year Post Pro’s have ascended to their desks on the seventh floor, happy to be free of last year’s advanced studio obligations. We’ve had a few weeks to try and settle back into our thesis research, but now our first big deliverable looms large: the Pamphlet. We welcomed Luke Bulman back to the seventh floor to lead a series of pamphlet/book making workshops and are now taking advantage of travel week to create our own.
